Federal election - ASK

What should we be asking of the candidates for the Halton riding. This should be an opportunity to ask tough questions of Lisa Raitt, Connie Laurin-Bowie and Pat Heroux on how they will support the needs of the homeless in Milton and the Halton region. Let's hope they attend the Empty Bowls on April 30th at St Paul's. We will plan our communications.

Success at Casa Americo

Our thanks to Casa Americo and the community in Milton for helping us raise $390 last night at the Wine Tasting. Manager of Casa Americo, Salvatore Crisci was very pleased to be supporting this project. The ambience, food, wine and company were excellent. Overwhelming response to painting of the Empty Bowls

The response to painting bowls for the Empty bowls event has been very well supported by the Milton community. In fact the owner of Simply Creative is unable to obtain more bowls on short notice for March 20 and 21. The committee for the Fundraising event wish to thank all who did paint a bowl and those who had the intention of going. To date, there are 180 bowls painted. They will be available on April 30 for gourmet soup. Thank you Lynn Dickinson of Simply Creative for your amazing support to our transitional housing project fundraising efforts

Hospital Costs and Length of Stay Among Homeless Patients Admitted to Medical, Surgical, and Psychiatric Services
by Hwang, S. W.; Weaver, J.; Aubry, T. D;. Hoch, J. S.
Homeless patients cost hospitals an extra $2,500, largely because they have underlying health problems and stay longer, a new study suggests.
The research found that hospital stays by the homeless cost an average of $2,559 more than for other patients – “a substantial impact on the health care system,” Stephen Hwang, lead author of the study and a physician at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, said in a release. Dr. Hwang compared data for 3,081 homeless patients and 90,345 patients from the general population who were admitted to St. Mike’s over a five-year period.
